Knight Lumber Company
The Knight Family established their roots in Yountville in the late 1940’s when Ralph and Louise Knight moved from San Francisco to Yountville and purchased two acres of ranch land at 1901 Yountville Cross Road. Ralph and Louise operated an egg ranch, selling eggs to Nulaid in Napa.
When the egg prices tumbled in the North Bay in the early 1950’s, Ralph Knight and his son, George Knight, opened Knight Lumber Company. They sold and delivered lumber and

building materials to local builders. Ralph Knight passed away in 1964. George Knight eventually converted the property to a small lumberyard and hardware store. He also started a very successful fence contracting business, Knight Fence Company. Louise Knight lived on the property until her death in 1979, regularly inviting employees and customers into her home for coffee or lunch. George Knight owned and operated the family businesses until he passed away in 1999.

Two of his sons, Brian and Eric, joined the family business in the late 1980’s and operated the businesses until 2003 when they closed the hardware store and sold the fencing business.
Knight’s three sons, Brian, Eric, and George, hired Bob Massaro and Healthy Buildings in Napa in 2006 to design and build a green residential project on the family homestead. The Knight Family’s goal is to develop a landmark residential project in the Napa Valley that minimizes the impact on the environment and optimizes building performance for the comfort and health of its residents. Today, George Knight’s three sons, Brian, Eric, and George are proud to present the first North Bay and Napa Valley approved residential subdivision registered under the U.S. Green Building Council’s LEED® for Homes program. This project will be built according to the U.S. Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) for Homes program, the most widely known and highly regarded green building guidelines in the United States.
Eric and Brian Knight still live in Yountville, and George Knight lives in Sacramento, CA. Eric Knight served on the Yountville Zoning and Design Review Board (ZDRB) from 1993 – 1997 and served two terms on the Yountville Town Council from 1997 – 2005.
